Date Change! July 16th, 2011 - Toronto Prepares for a Bam Bam with Chaka Demus & Pliers and Tiger!

Date Change!  Chaka Demus & Pliers and Tiger will be performing in Toronto on July 16^th, 2011 at the Phoenix Concert Theatre.

Kingston Class Reunion wishes to inform the public that the show originally scheduled for Saturday July 2^nd, 2011 will now be rescheduled to Saturday July 16^th, 2011 at the Phoenix Concert Theatre, 410 Sherbourne Street, Toronto.

“With the addition of Dancehall veteran Tiger to the bill, schedules were overlapping, so we had to make the date change” said a Kingston Class Reunion representative.  “Fans are in for an incredible night of great vibes, we’re just doing it two weeks later than planned!”

Now in its third staging, Kingston Class Reunion will give the city of Toronto an unprecedented night of entertainment as three Dancehall legends take the stage at the Phoenix Concert Theatre (410 Sherbourne Street)!

With their careers spanning more than three decades, Chaka Demus & Pliers are the first Jamaican act to place three consecutive singles in the top five of the British music charts.  Attaining additional accolades such as having performed at the 2007 American Music Awards with Alicia Keys, and having their song featured in the movie soundtrack for Poetic Justice (starring Janet Jackson & Tupac Shakur) and Save the Last Dance (starring Julia Stiles and Sean Patrick Thomas), fans of three generation have a love for their music.

Tiger, whose music career began in 1978 rose to Dancehall prominence in 1986 with the release of the song “Puppy Love,” followed by the 1988 hit, “Bam Bam” and the Steely & Clevie produced “Ram Dancehall.”

Tiger has recorded with the Award winning group the Fat Boys, and has had his music featured in the movie ‘Cool Runnings.’  He was later signed to Columbia Records where he released an album featuring production from Sly & Robbie, The Brand New Heavies and a guest rap from the infamous group Tribe Called Quest.

Joining Chaka Demus & Pliers and Tiger are hosts Natasha Von Castle from 88.1 CKLN and L3 Radio, and Delroy Sterling from CHRY 105.5 FM and supporting artists Mel Dube, 2011 Award nominee Ammoye and veteran artist Uncle Jonny who will be backed by Canada’s number one band, EOP (Essence of Praise).  Additional music will be provided by Wiz International, Massey Sound, Tre-Jah-Isle International and DJ Chocolate.

Since the announcement of Chaka Demus & Pliers and Tiger on The Caribbean Crucible with Luther Brown, the city of Toronto has declared this concert to be the most anticipated on the event calendar.

Beres Hammond has paved a smooth road for artists who come after him.  His brand of

Reggae gave birth to Lovers Rock which is a sub-genre of Reggae, and one that is embraced

by all people no matter what their background!

 

Paying respect to Beres, is Suga Roy and Jahvanti with their cover of Beres's classic 

"Falling in Love!" 

 

With the riddim rebuilt by Suga Roy for FireballRecords, Jahvanti offers the smooth Beres style vocals while Suga intro's the chune with somespice in his DJ'd lyrics: "well yuh see Jahvanti / dat girl ah mash up yuh mind / cho mek she know man nuh waste time!" 

 

With that, Jahvanti goes into the memorable lyrics:

"Right Now" with Friendlyness & The Human Rights!

Friendlyness & Human Rights (FHR) & House of David Gang (HODG) are two of Toronto's busiest touring reggae acts who have joined forces to release a 45 rpm / 7inch vinyl on the Toronto imprint Ohm Grown Records/NuFunk Recordings.  FHR are releasing a new song "Right Now", and HODG are releasing their first single from their upcoming CD called "Reggae Party."  The partnership of these two lead reggae bands were solidified at a sold out concert at Lee's Palace in February honoring the life of the immortal reggae superstar Bob Marley.  Joining the release party are Gisto; M3 of BC based band "The Wassabi Collective mix of rock, hiphop, reggae and electro to their cult-like " who will bring their following in Toronto.

FRIENDLYNESS & THE HUMAN RIGHTS
FHR released their debut CD "One Thing" in June 2010. Friendlyness, a Juno nominated vocalist and devoted Rastafarian has had a long history in the Canadian reggae scene working with such groups as Culture Shock, Raggadeath, SuperHeavy Reggae, and Truths & Rights. Friendlyness has also recently joined the reunited high-profile Canadian rock band Big Sugar, who recently performed for several thousand people at the Sound Academy in March for Canadian Music Week. Over the last three years Friendlyness and the Human Rights have been honoured to warm up the stage for reggae legends Gregory Isaacs, Beres Hammond, John Holt, The English Beat and Clive Chin. They have also been featured on regae & ska festivals in Western and Central Canada including The Calgary Reggae Fest and IRIE fest in Toronto.

HOUSE OF DAVID GANG
HODG takes its name from a legendary rooftop apartment on Queen Street West in downtown Toronto. "The House of David" was the after hours spot of choice for the city's burgeoning reggae scene in the late 1980s. It was a place where members of Selassie I Power, The Resinators, Revelation, Imagine Rainbow Warriors and special guest touring musicians would join together and jam late into the night.  Now with a revamped line-up House of David Gang has toured Central & Atlantic Canada, having performed at Evolve Festival, Salty Jam, Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival, Ottawa Reggae Fest and to over 10,000 people at the Toronto Freedom Festival in 2010.

M3 (Melissa Meretsky) Percussionist/Singer and Gisto (Brent Hongisto) Guitarist/Singer/Producer are the frontmen of BC based Wassabi Collective who have thoroughly honed their craft over a thousand shows and 7 years on the road across North America.  The duo will be showcasing their evolution with an all new Electro Reggae Dance sound featuring all the percussion, guitar and vocals backed by live sequencing through Ableton Live.  The response has been overwhelming, now the high energy duo is set to embark on their first Central & East coast Canadian Tour.

Toronto Rocks for the 5th Annual Reggae Music Achievement Awards!

Delroy Sterling Productions, in association with Pattie World are pleased to present the 5^th staging of the Reggae Music Achievement Awards which will be held June 4^th at the Jamaican Canadian Association, 995 Arrow Rd.

Presented to Canada’s cream of the crop, the 5^th Annual Reggae Music Awards is divided into 20 categories ranging from ‘Best Reggae Album,’ to ‘Best Radio Disc Jock’ to ‘Best International Artist.’  Previous winners in each category include Steele’s album ‘The Man The Music,’ Natty B for the radio show Zion Train and Busy Signal for best international artist.

Razor B Gives Fans a December to Remember!

OG Entertainment recording artist, Razor B made December the month for his fans to remember as he performed on stages across Jamaica, appeared on television in England and Jamaica, and connected with fans on radio in Jamaica, Atlanta, The Cayman Islands and Bermuda!

“It was a whirlwind” said Razor B from his home in Toronto.  “I was blessed with the opportunity to do back to back shows which gave me a chance to interact with my fans.  They felt my energy and it was great!”

From the poster signing for the Sting launch on December 3^rd, to the Claro Community Fair on December 27^th, Razor proved he has the full package for promoter and fans alike as he covered the stages for several shows.  Adding to his impact, Razor appeared on Bess FM (Jamaica), Radio Cayman (Cayman Islands), WorldLynkzradio (Washington DC), Linkage Radio (Bermuda) and more, allowing the artist to connect with fans in between shows. 

Rounding out his media appearances, Razor B appeared on Hype TV and BBC, and was featured in several newsprint outlets across the island.

Since the release of the song “Hot Girls to the Ring,” and the follow up release in “We Party,” Razor B’s Dancehall prominence continues to build.  “I’ve been playing Razor B’s songs since they first came out” said Zip FM’s hot DJ, Zip Jock Elektra.  “People immediately love it; they’re good songs!”  This sentiment has been echoed by Jah Prince from Atlanta who interviewed Razor B on his radio show ‘Sunsplash Mix Show’ which was widely popular with the DJ’s listening audience in Atlanta.

Tifa - Good Up! 

Canada is still developing when it comes to sound systems who qualify to be representatives

on the international stage.  If I am to be totally honest, I would say we have two.  Of those two, one set the foundation for the younger generation and that would be King Turbo!

 

Born in Scarborough, the sound was the first of the younger generation to have a studio for

voicing dubplates, mixed tapes that reached all corners of the world, and two radio shows.

Both shows are still on the air, one on 89.5 FM and the other on 93.5 FM.  King Turbo was

one of the first sound systems to put Canadian artists on the international map.  Lindo P and

Blessed are just two examples. 

 

I should also mention that when I decided to leave my practice as a Paralegal in Entertainment Law, King Turbo gave me my first job as their manager.  Believe me, our roots go deep!

 

So why all the history?  Sometimes it's good to know who you're playing with before you even
