►►► Classic Friday! ►►► Come And Ride This Reggae Train!

In 1975, some people were teens, others were infants and others still hadn't been born.  For
the Ska King, Mr. Derrick Morgan, 1975 marked the release of his album 'Feel So Good' and his hit record "Reggae Train" which without doubt is a Ska classic!

As the Ska master, Derrick is responsible for hits "Tougher than Tough" and "Do The Beng
Beng."  "Tougher than Tough" was featured in the video game Scarface:  The World is Yours
which helps to keep this legends music and catalog at the forefront of youth consciousness.

Among the more interesting facts about Mr. Morgan is his very public rivalry with Prince Buster in which the two battled out their differences via music.

With the release of the song "Housewives Choice" Prince Buster felt Derrick stole his ideas, so in response, Buster released "Blackhead Chiney Man" which was a snipe at Morgan and his close relationship with producer Leslie Kong.  Morgan replied with the release of "Blazing Fire."  The back and forth got so out of control, the Jamaican government stepped in and staged a photoshoot showing the two rivals shaking hands and at peace with each other.  (Does this sound familiar?  We recall a major rivarly last year in which two Dancehall artists
went through something similar...)

►►► Classic Friday! ►►► What Happens When Nuff Man Deya?!

Greetings!

As it's 'Black Friday' and shopping is on your
mind (and my mind too!), this entry will be brief!

Black Solidarity Records run by Phillip Morgan
and Oswald Thomas released their own version
of the Mud Up riddim which was also called the
'Woman Deya' riddim which featured the vocals
of Professor Nuts and the hit chune "Woman
Deya!"

The chune poked fun at the happenings at a dance
where there are more men than women.  Professor
Nuts wasn't having it and did something about
it.  What did he do?!  You'll have to listen to the
chune to find out!  Ha!

One of the 'celebrities' of the riddim is the bass
player as much as the artist.  The catchy bass
line moves the riddim which in turn moves the
artists vocals.  A great example is that of Tippa
Irie who plays off the bassline using the words
'ten' / 'Gwen' / 'Ben' / 'Gar-den'!  You have to hear
the chune!

riddim here:

►►► Classic Friday! ►►► Setting the Pace!

Greetings!

In Motorsport, a pace car is used to limit the
speed of competing cars during a caution period,
or at a time when there's an obstruction on the
race track.  When the pace car is on the track,
no one, not even one car, is able to pass it; that
car sets the pace!

Sometimes we get so caught up in what we're
doing, and so determined to achieve our goal(s),
that we abuse others in the process.  Before we
get to those levels, we need to apply the pace
car to 'slow down the pace' which is the name
of today's Throwback Thursday profile!

Produced by Sheldon "Calibud" Stewart & Norman
"Bulpus" Bryan for VP Records Riddim Driven
series, this riddim was one of the sweetest as it
featured the vocals of the cool ruler, Mr. Gregory
Isaacs, who teamed with the ole gangalee, Louie
Culture on the chune "Tune In!"  Another hit chune
from the riddim is Buju Banton's "Nah Move Right"
where the artist speaks of the effects of gun crime.
Further on in the riddim, the producers switch up
the arrangement of the riddim, making it more
melodic, and base it off of Alton Ellis's "Breaking Up."

Leaders in that segment include Glen Washington's
"I Stand Alone" and Junior Kelly's "Sleep Last Night."

P.S. 1:  Yesterday's e-blast had a broken link to
the Bellyas Riddim.  The correct link is here:

P.S. 2:  Last week's Thrownback Thursday featured
a new chune from Luciano called "Moving On".
I mentioned that I didn't know the riddim details,
but thanks to Tommi from Komposti Sound,
Paulo from Reggae Portugal, Dash Eye, Unite
and the entire Tribe of Kings Family, we now
know the original chune was called "Only A Smile"
which was performed by the Paragons for Duke
Reid's Treasure Isle Records!

P.S. 3:  Reggae 4 Us.com has now teamed with
On Tha Move Radio.com uniting London and New
York.  Peep the video here:  Two Continents, Two
