Temperatures on the east coast of the United States and Canada are unseasonably high, so to match the unprecedented heat, the team at L3 Magazine decided to feature the hottest Dancehall artist for the October 2013 issue; Sean Paul.

Speaking exclusively to Natasha Von Castle from his home in Jamaica, Sean shared his views on the industry as a whole, including the number of mainstream artists who are adopting Dancehall and or Dancehall elements in their music.  Sean’s focus is on his new album Full Frequency which is due to be released soon.  Full Frequency is the follow up to Tomahawk Technique, ushering in the ‘TTFF’ era!  Always one to make his views clear, Sean takes the time to correct a mis-quote issued by another media outlet about his views on Snoop Lion (formerly known as Snoop Dogg).  What does the artist really think about Snoop Lion’s album?

Coming from a sports background, what similarities does Sean find between sports and music?  We get this and more from the artist.

Tricia ‘ZJ Sparks’ Spence speaks with one of Reggae’s brightest sensations, Jesse Royal who is also known as the Small Axe.  Not one to give too many interviews, Jesse shares the inspiration for his song “Light Like a Feather’ while sharing his views on the difference between a ‘glamour Ras’ and a real Rasta.  Tounding out the interview, Jesse says that “I work on myself; my mentality, spirituality and physicality. It is all a oneness. From that comes everything else.”  What question did Sparkie ask to promtp this response?!

Nicholai Khan’s art is 100% inspired by Spirituality, and is very hard to resist when seen online or in person.  Having traveled to 7 continents, visiting as many cultures and learning several spiritual practices, Nicholai explains how he interprets the energy of Bob Marley which became a fan favorite in Queen’s and attracting visitors to ponder the piece’s meaning.  Nicholai says “believe in something so big, and I believe we are all included in that.  The fact of the matter is that even though we are separate, we get to share our universes with each other.”

Culture Shock Fashion Show – Year 2!

The hottest fashion show in Atlanta is back for its second year on Saturday June 1^st, 2013! The Culture Shock Show proved last year that it is more than just a fashion show, it’s a mix of live musical performances, spoken word, vendors and food from people all over the world that will leave you SHOCKED!

2013 marks the second year of the show, and organizers are going harder!  With a new venue and more designers from around the country, this years’ show also includes a hair show and standup comedy.

Mission Catwalk Season 2 Winner Gregory Williams readies for London trip!

Like the athletes who represented ‘the Rock’ with stellar performances at the 2012 Olympics in London, Mission Catwalk Season 2 winner Gregory Williams is ready to make his mark on the European city when he arrives for his studies at the London College of Fashion and master tailor Andrew Ramroop’s Sevile Row Academy next month.

“It’s not that I didn’t know before, but their accomplishments really convinced me that the sky is the limit,” says the 28 year old Cross Roads native. “I just want to go there and give it my all. Jamaica need fi deya pon di fashion map.”

Part of $3m in prizes offered throughout the season, Gregory’s winnings also includes $200,000 worth of sewing equipment from Singer which he has already received. He’s also opened a business account at NCB with a $500,000.00 cash contribution from the bank that will fund his HOD Designs fashion line. Come Fashion’s Night Out (Thursday September 6) fans will get a preview of his designs at SOHO Boutique. The items will be available for sale in December. Also in September, his Mission Catwalk model Sydia Valentine will shoot a fashion spread for OCEAN Style’s December issue. She will walk at Gregory’s London Fashion Week (LFW) presentation in February 2013. The winning prize previously included the chance to show at LFW September 2012. 

The show’s host and executive producer Keneea Linton-George explains the change, “When we thought about it, it just made sense. Gregory’s focus should be on school and mastering the skills necessary to become a top-class designer. At the end of our last season, he had to create a collection for Caribbean Fashion Week (CFW) and viewers saw upfront how challenging that was. We want to spare him the pressure and have him focus on his studies which will also take him to Paris.”  

Apart from his College of Fashion classes, Gregory will apprentice with Trinidad-born bespoke Tailor Andrew Ramroop who has dressed prominent men including members of the Royal Family, parliamentarians and entertainers such as Jay-Z and Will Smith.

Gregory, a former Saint International model, was considered one of the most outspoken contestants on the 13-episode show, which featured participants from around the region. Voted fan favorite by Jamaican viewers he snagged the title with his cohesive collection of sexy and edgy pieces which he presented at CFW along with three other finalists on June 8. He was announced as winner of the show on June 19.

Since then Gregory has been busy designing for his regular clients, attending fashionable events and contributing to the wardrobe of Miss Jamaica World 2012 Deanna Robins. He also created a look for the Jamaica 50 fashion show at the Jubilee Village in the National Stadium.

Team L3 is in festive Olympic spirits this month as we receive news and updates about Caribbean athletes competing at the world’s highest level of competition.  We are pleased to bring our readers some of the best photos that capture the essence and the feel of the Olympics prior to the closing ceremony on Sunday August 12^th, 2012.

Tricia ‘Sparks’ Spence interviews No Maddz, a band from Jamaica, who is a shining success for the world to see and hear.  The group has been together for years, has played and performed in multiple cities, and is one of the few to say they are endorsed by major corporations.  How they achieved success, and their plans for the future is covered.  Did we mention the fact that they have an uncontrollable sense of humour?!

 

Heike Dempster covered Jamaica’s premiere Reggae Festival, Sumfest, 2012.  Reporting on the performances, and including her impressions, Heike gives us a full recap of one of the Caribbean’s best shows, and includes photo highlights such as the Emperor, Shabba Ranks performing as well as Lady Saw being officially crowned Dancehall Queen!

Today’s music has moved far the ‘soul’ it once had until you meet and hear the voice of, Leela James!  L3’s Jennifer Menster sat down with the 2012 Soul Goddess in California just before the release of her tribute album to Etta James.  Leela is fun, playful, few on words but oozing positive and colourful energy that melts the most hardened of hearts.  Having traveled the world with her music, Leela is one trademark we are pleased to present in our folds!

We were on the scene in Japan for Lukie D and Iakopo’s well received performance, hosted by Tokiyas Sound as well as in Toronto for Caribana’s Junior Carnival hosted by Yorkgate Mall in the Jane and Finch Community!
